Are Tight ends Underappreciated in Todays League?
This last offseason has been the craziest it has ever been with teams moving players all around the league as well as players getting some of the biggest contracts ever. This is especially the case with wide receivers, as wide receivers in the last offseason have been getting a ridiculous amount of money. However, this makes me a little upset because there is one group that seems to be left out: the tight ends.
In my opinion, I think that an elite tight end is way more important than an elite wide receiver. First off, the wide receiver position is so saturated that it is very easy nowadays to get a good wide receiver and maybe even two. On top of that many of the leagues’ quarterbacks nowadays seem to be so good, that they are making these receivers seem better than they actually are. Quarterbacks such as Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and even Deshaun Watson have all had below average receiving cores at some point in their career and still manages to do good or even great. Now that these receivers are getting way overpaid, it might not even be worth getting an elite wide receiver. Teams that overpay players tend to not make it very far in the playoffs because they cannot afford the depth they need.
Unlike wide receivers, an elite tight end is very hard to come by. There is a huge drop off in the production of tight ends and the market is not nearly as saturated as the wide receiver one is. This makes me think that elite tight ends like Kelce and Kittle should be getting paid more than these receivers… but they are not. Now some people will argue that the wide receiver position is more important, but as I said earlier, I disagree. The tight end is the deadliest threat on third down and in the red zone and in my opinion, these are the most important parts of the offensive game. A good tight end is nearly unguardable on third down plays because nowadays they are so big and so fast. Same on plays in the red zone. There is a reason that Brady always gets the ball to Gronk in the red zone. Not to mention that tight ends also block. They are helpful on rushing and passing plays. I am not the only person who feels this way either: the Chiefs feel the same way. The Chiefs had one of the best tight ends in the league as well as one of the best wide receivers and they chose to let the receiver go and keep the tight end. I think this is because they feel like Mahomes will succeed with mediocre receiving talent, but that there was no way they could ever replace Kelce. I do not think that wide receivers are not important I am just simply saying that I think a tight end is more important than a receiver.
