After handing Bayern Munich their first loss in the Champions League in five years, Villarreal looked to keep their one goal aggregate lead away at Allianz Stadium. The match was close, but Bayern were not playing their football.
Bayern manager, Julian Nagelsmann, made two changes, adding an extra midfielder in the form of Goretzka and substituting Sané for Gnabry out wide. Bayern also changed formations to a 3-2-4-1 and hoped to play aggressive and score goals.
1st leg Starting XI: Neuer, Davies, Pavard, Hernández, Upamecano, Müller, Kimmich, Coman, Gnabry, Musiala, Lewandowski
2nd leg Starting XI: Neuer, Pavard, Upamecano, Hernández, Kimmich, Goretzka, Müller, Sané, Musiala, Coman, Lewandowski
Villarreal manager, Unai Emery, made no changes to his squad, feeling that his side could produce the same result as the first leg. They played a 4-4-2 once again.
1st leg Starting XI: Rulli, Foyth, Estupiñán, Torres, Albiol, Capoue, Lo Celso, Parejo, Coquelin, Danjuma, Moreno
2nd leg Starting XI: Rulli, Foyth, Estupiñán, Torres, Albiol, Capoue, Lo Celso, Parejo, Coquelin, Danjuma, Moreno
Aided by the roar of their fans, Bayern started out strong on the attacking foot, but Villarreal was hard to break down. Their first chance on goal came from a corner that Goretzka met with his head in the 17th minute.
Two minutes later, the 19-year-old Musiala received the ball from Coman and drove to the sideline, chipping in a cross across the face of the goal but no one was there.
Musiala continued to make his presence known both up top creating chances and dodging defenders and in the air. In the 29th minute, Benjamin Pavard sent in a curling cross that Musiala headed at Rulli who handled it calmly. Musiala and Capoue collided in the process and both were down for a little bit with head injuries. They both remained on the field.
Lewandowski saw yellow in the 32nd minute after a late challenge on Albiol. For the most part, both sides were even, and both defenses were strong. Few chances were produced, and it was a battle of the midfields.
The last chance of the half came at the end of stoppage time as Moreno was able to find the ball and turn into space. His shot from 8 yards out hit the side netting, and the referee blew for halftime.
Bayern were determined to score, and Upamecano nearly broke the tie in the 50th minute. Kimmich’s cross went all the way to the other side of the goal where Leroy Sané was able to get to the sideline and pass it to Upamecano. He skied it, but the crowd could tell a goal was coming.
The next chance Bayern got two minutes later, the clinical striker, Lewandowski, found the back of the net from outside the box. Coman was able to intercept the ball. After a series of passes, it ended at one of the UCL’s top scorer’s feet, and he buried it. 1-0 Bayern (1-1 agg.)

Bayern were hungry and continued to attack. Cross after cross was sent into the box, but no one could connect. Müller sent it over, and Coman was fouled by Foyth just outside the box, creating a set piece that amounted to nothing. Foyth was awarded a yellow card. The ball was kept in VIllarreal’s defensive third as Bayern looked for another goal.
A major chance for Bayern came in the 71st minute as Sané whipped in a left-footed cross from outside the box on the right side. It found Thomas Müller’s head uncontested, but he was not able to put it on target.
In the 76th minute, it was Coman’s turn to create something. He cut inside and evaded Foyth. He ripped a shot from outside that barely missed high.
As time dwindled down, Nagelsmann needed to make a change. Musiala gave way for Serge Gnabry in the 82nd minute. The next play Villarreal had a huge chance. Rulli sent a ball from his box to the striker Moreno who flicked it on for Danjuma. Danjuma missed his shot wide, and that was his last action of the night as Emery brought on Pedraza for him in the 84th minute.
For Bayern, the Canadian star Alphonso Davies came on for Lucas Hernández in the 87th minute. Nagelsmann hoped his speed down the flanks would create the chance for the goal they so desperately needed.
Davies did not produce the result they wanted. Lo Celso was able to receive the ball in the middle of the park that broke Bayern’s line. He distributed it to Moreno who led Chukwueze into space. Chukwueze stayed composed and first-timed the ball into the back of the net. Villarreal were ahead once again with only two minutes left in regular time. 1-1 (2-1 agg. Villarreal)

Eric Chuopo-Moting came on for Müller at the beginning of stoppage time. The deal was all but sealed for Villarreal. Bayern could do nothing as Villarreal made one last substitution, replacing Parejo for Aurier.
In a match where they dominated stats all across the board, Bayern could not succeed where they needed it the most, finishing. Bayern had the majority of possession and 20 more shots. Villarreal had one shot on target and 4 total, but they made their chances count, something Bayern needs to work on.
Villarreal will take on Liverpool today in the 1st leg of the Semi Final at Anfield in England.
